Stained Glass Repair & Resoration
Every leaded window needs a little attention eventually, and if caught in time a quick on site repair may be all that is required.
If though the damage is too great, such as bowing and broken lead, we will remove the panel and take it to our studio and there restore the window to its former condition.
Traditional techniques are used through out the stained glass repair, antique glass is matched as closely as possible to the colour and texture of the original and a constant push to conserve, as oppose to replace, is the belief for every restoration job that we undertake.
If your lead light includes original painted features we have talented artists on hand to faithfully recreate any damaged or missing pieces.
To talk through your requirements please get in touch, and a site visit can be arranged if further information is necessary.
In-Situ Stained Glass Repair
When individual panes of glass are broken it is usually possible to repair each one in-situ, this means the job can be done on site and for a fraction of the cost of a full repair.
The broken pieces will be removed, the lead channels cleaned of old cement and then gently bent back on one side to allow for the new piece to be slotted in place. Once in the lead can be flattened back down and specialist lead light cement applied to seal the glass to the lead.
It is not possible to do this type of repair if the lead is broken or brittle, or the broken pane is a tricky, complicated shape.
If in doubt send us an image of the damage and we can discuss the best action to take.
Full Repair and Re-lead of Stained Glass
Unfortunately, an in-situ repair is not always possible. If the lead has cracked, become brittle and flakey, broken away from the tie bars or the whole panel has started to bow then a full re-lead is required.
The panel would have to be removed and taken to our Bristol studio to be dismantled, carefully cleaned, and any broken pieces replaced with the closest possible match. The panel can then be remade using new lead and lead light cement, cleaned and polished it is then ready to be reinstalled back into its original frame.
This process usually takes about two weeks.
